What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered and heightened state and sometimes referred to as a trance state. You slip in and out of trance states throughout the day. For example, when you day-dream, driving and even watching a movie.  This is when you are at your most relaxed and comfortable. This is also the time when your best ideas come to mind. There are two components to the mind, the conscious and the unconscious. Their explanation is very simple:

The Conscious mind

It is the component of your mind that reasons and makes decisions. It acts as a filter to thoughts and suggestions, deciding whether to keep them in the forefront of your mind, or dismiss them altogether. When a thought or suggestion is put ‘on hold,’ it goes straight to the unconscious mind where it is filed away.

The unconscious mind

The unconscious mind is a filing cabinet for your thoughts. Amongst other things, it houses all the information your conscious gives it to store, like recollections and things it cannot deal with immediately.

For example, if you have a fear or a phobia, anxiety or lack confidence, this is most likely due to an experience that transpired early in your life. This may not have been anything bad, but as a child, you viewed it in a certain way. You might have forgotten all about it, but whatever it was, it has kept you running on this program throughout your life, and so certain situations and events will trigger a reaction in you. One of the huge advantages of hypnotherapy is that it will get to the root of the problem and sort it out very quickly indeed.

 

Another benefit is that while in hypnosis, your unconscious mind is very receptive to positive suggestions. Therefore, your practitioner can help you to reframe the way you think and feel about things, replacing negativity with positive thoughts and feelings which are more compliant for you.

What to expect from Hypnotherapy?

Before your therapy sessions, it is recommended that you have a Free Initial Consultation. The initial consultation is a free session that lasts approximately 20 minutes and gives them an opportunity to assess what you want to achieve and your personal desires.

 

Everything is explained to you during the first session so you will know what to expect. They will discuss your challenges and take a complete medical history.

 

The practitioners will explain how the brain works, how a problem is created and how hypnotherapy can help you to overcome your obstacles or difficulties, as well as discuss how many sessions you are likely to need.

 

They will assist you into hypnosis. You may not even realize that you are in hypnosis, until you awaken from the deep state; then it will be clear, because you will feel so relaxed. In fact, many people have said that it is the best relaxation they have ever experienced.

 

Usually, during subsequent sessions they will help you into hypnosis, and together they will gently search into your past to find information that will help you to understand why you have a ‘challenge/s’. As you relax you will be able to put these experiences into perspective as you release the anchors from your past..

Hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goals by collaborating with the practitioners; together they identify where you want to be and how to get there. They commence each session with a discussion designed to encourage you to think positively. This component of the course uses techniques that allows you to focus on how you want things to be in your life, rather than focusing on what you don’t want.

 

Once this is established and you have a clear idea of your preferred future, they will consolidate the steps you need to achieve positive change, and merge that positivity. The suggestions they share to you during this part of your therapy will enable the unconscious part of your mind to make that preferred future a reality.

You already know what you need to do to maintain your ideal weight, So what’s stopping you? There could be a whole host of reasons why. Maybe, your life is so busy and hectic that you do not have time to shop for healthier fresh food or prepare it, let alone savour it. You may have feelings of low self-esteem, which can lead to you developing self-sabotaging behaviour. You might have unhelpful beliefs around food, such as needing to eat everything on your plate.

 

Hypnotherapy can find your motivation by helping you to make positive changes, as you think and feel about yourself and the world. This will help you to manage your weight. To do this, they collaborate and address the underlying stresses that obstruct you making excuses around food, exercise etc. However, it can only help if you make an effort to do something different, so be ready to make changes. It is worth remembering that hypnosis is not a “do-to process”, it is a “do-with process”, and they aim for steady, sustainable weight loss.

 

Hypnotherapy can help with these issues, but it is not a magic wand. You will not be able to lose weight unless you change what you eat or take more exercise, preferably both.

 

With some one-off sessions they may not need to probe into your past at all. For example, you might just want some hypnosis for relaxation purposes, or because you have an event coming up, such as an exam or a driving test. If this is the case, you will probably only need one or two sessions for some relaxation, and useful suggestions to give your confidence a boost and to help you focus.

 

During all hypnotherapy treatment, you will be aware of everything going on around you, and you will easily be able to talk and interact with your practitioner. You cannot be made to do or say anything that your unconscious mind does not want you to do, as it will reject any suggestions that do not fit with your values or sense of personal wellbeing. Furthermore, you are in complete control because you can come out of hypnosis whenever you want – simply open your eyes!

Hypnotherapy is a collaboration between you and your hypnotherapist. Nobody can make you do anything that you do not agree to do, and no-one can hypnotise you against your will, as your unconscious mind will reject any suggestions that are against your own beliefs.
